Nigeria’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, has redeemed his financial pledge to Nigeria’s athletes to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
It was earlier reported that Dare had promised to financially reward the Paralympics athletes who excelled at the Games in Tokyo in which Nigeria featured 22 athletes in four events at the Games.
Newsmen learned that the athletes who won gold were rewarded with $10,000 each, while those who won silver and bronze medals got $8,000 and $7,000 respectively.
A top ministry official confirmed the development to journalists and said the athletes have been receiving the funds promised to them by the minister.
Reports show that Nigeria won a total of 10 medals – four gold, one silver, and five bronze medals at the Games which include powerlifting, para-athletics, para-table tennis, and para-rowing in Tokyo.
Team Nigeria captain at the Games Lucy Ejike, who won bronze in women’s powerlifting also confirmed that they had been paid.
